Notes from the field, PJ McConnell:

Those pictures of waves were from the day that we were leaving. I actually took them as we were driving to the airport. It was supposed to pick up that day. That place is called Zunzal. It is supposed to pick up even the smallest swell.

El Salvador is pretty heavy still. We got robbed one day, which was kind of stupid on our part. We parked our cars where we couldn't see them and didn't pay anybody to watch them. Whoever it was broke into them and stole everything that we had brought with us. They didn't steal any stereo's or anything like that, just t-shirts, board bags, hats, and sunglasses. So it wasn't like a real break in, it was more like a message. Actually, right after we walked up to our cars, a guy came out of the bushes and told me that if we parked there again and didn't pay anybody, they would take our cars, or smash them to bits with rocks. He said what they had done was a warning. Then he disappeared into the bushes in like three seconds. that f'er was probably in on it. He is now sleeping in mike's board bag.

El Salvador (a sunny place for shady people)

My one and only trip there was June of 05 I think.. we saw a dead body on the beach 5 hours off the plane then pulled into our hotel about 100yards past it, our guide puncked a kind from O-side for his board, a woman got robbed while her hubby was surfing zinzal by 14 year olds with cobbles(damn cobbles), we got chased off the point at punta roca by a guy with a machete.. The waves were killer but not worth a second trip.
Did PJ surf the left wedge in front of the roca zanzul hotel??

We didn't surf Zunzal at all. We caught the beach break at Mizata at about head-high, El Zonte at about a foot overhead and Palmarcito at about waist high. At El Zonte, a local bodyboarder decided that he did not like two guys there and proceeded to start screaming at them. I don't want to judge, but the wild eyes and missing teeth screamed "I am a crack head" to me. We also caught K59 at about chest high, and that was a really good wave. BUT... We got robbed in between K59 and K61. Both these set-ups (K59 and 61) are really good, but very very shady, if you park where we did. Apprently (now) you can take one of the other roads from the big highway down to the beach, pay someone, and hope for the best. There is a surf camp in front of K59 so even though all the reports say that it will be empty, you will always have one or two guys out, maybe friendly, maybe not. I don't think that I will go back to El Salvador.
